Lost in Time

Finally time to release the “Lost in Time” shawl pattern. The name came to me becouse of the vintage feeling it has and also that the time flies by working on this shawl 🙂 This pattern is a repetition of 12 rows which means you can use any yarn or hook and customizing your shawls size by the number of repetitions.

Thank you so much Charlotta Hjortbacken (@charlottahjortbacken on Instagram) and Lisa Cook (@lisasattik on Instagram) for testing this design  ❤

This shawl is made of  bits and pieces of Scheepjes Catona, a 1oo % cotton yarn, and hook 4.0 mm. The size is aprox 145 cm wing span and 75 cm over the spine, tassels not included. The total amount of yarn is between 6 and 7 skeins of Catona 50 g. For this multi coloured version use the color guide at the bottom of this page.

You can buy the yarn for this version of the shawl via my Amazon US Storefront *. Be sure to look at the color guide below as a reference for yarn quantities.

  1. Hi there. To start things off on a good note, I think your patterns are nothing shirt of beautiful. You do amazing work and are very talented. That being said, I was unable to gain access to either of the two patterns I wished to try out today (primarily your Lost in Time pattern). Any attempts to visit your blog via the links you provided also proved to be fruitless, as most links on this page were unable to be used to get to the content I was hoping to view. Furthermore, even your drop down mobile menu appears to not be working correctly, as I am unable to even get it to open up so that I can navigate to other lRts of.your page. Im very disappointed. I searched for hours for patterns and works by crafters I genuinely loved and found beautiful, and was very excited to experiment with some of your patterns. I will check back some other time in hopes that these issues get resolved. I hope you are well. Keep creating!

    1. Hi and thank you for your kind words 🙂

I have not heard from anyone else that they cant download my patterns. Maybe you can try another browser? Do you have some kind of pop up window protection installed?
I have tested the links from both a phone and a computer today and both works fine for me.
      Kind regards,
      Johanna

      1. I came across this pattern today and tried to access it via the Free Access link on Ravelry.
I find no link on your Blog to the pattern which is very frustrating. So I am at least a 2nd person who is letting you know of this problem. If you hear from a couple of people about a problem it is safe to assume many others are just not letting you know they also have it.

Can you please send the actual URL link to the pattern so I may access it. It is a wonderful design. Thank You.

      2. Hi,
As you can see below the person britgirl58 downloaded the pattern the next day via her PC and the link worked fine.
I can also see in my statistics that more than 100 persons downloaded the Lost in Time pattern yesterday. Sometimes your web browser don’t allow pop up windows and that might be your problem. Please try to download the pattern again with another browser or device.
        Kind regards,

thought you might like to know that you have a tiny error in your yarn numbers colour guide (79*=179).

Ps. I adore your patterns and colour choices. I find your work very inspiring.

  6. Hi. I love this pattern. It’s beautiful and easy to follow. The only problem I have is the color guide. It only goes to row 50 and the shawl has 110 rows. Do I repeat colors just the same as the first 15 thru 26.
Also, according to the color guide, the violet (282) is only used in the border. Yet the pictures show violet used in the shawl. Do I only use 282 in the border?
    Thanks

    1. Hi and thank you 🙂
The color guide only goes to row 59 since that was how many rows I made when making my Lost in Time shawl. I only used the 282 violet in the border and another violet in the rows before.
How you chose to use the colors after 50 rows is a matter of taste, many peope repeat the colors from previous repetitions.
      Kind regards,
      Johanna

  7. I started crocheting in December and could only follow videos on youtube. Yours is the first time I tried reading a pattern – and my shawl is turning out beautiful. Thank you so much for your generosity and time. I love how at the end of each row you tell us how many of each kinds of stitched there are instead of just the number of stitches – so very helpful! Thank you again so much.

    1. Hi, and thank you so much for your positive feedback. I remember that when I started crochet I loved when designers put a stitch count at the end of each row, and therefore I do it now in my own patterns 🙂

  13. Hi Johanna, I absolutely love this pattern and the color choice of the Scheepjes Catona. I live in South Florida and don’t have much need for a shawl, but if I make two shawls and join them will that work to turn it into a throw/afghan? Thank you again for the lovely pattern!

    1. Hi April and thank you so much!
You can sew two shawls together to make a square, but that will give you a seem straight through the throw. Another suggestion is to make the Squared Lost in Time which I designed. It is a square that you can make in any size you like and it has the same stitches as the Lost in Time Shawl. In addition it also has a popcorn flower center 🙂

  14. Hi, i would like to report what i think is a little mistake in the Italian pattern. Row 17 in the english version says: Ch 1, {2 dc, 2 ch, 2 dc} in next ch-2 space. However in the Italian version it has been translated as: “1 cat, 1 ma + 2 cat +1 ma nello spazio di 2 cat” so you have 1 less dc for each side. Regards, Daniela

  19. Hej Johanna
First of all thank you a lot for this beautiful pattern. I am enjoying sooo much working on it (maybe except the dealing with the threads ending after every row) Am doing your original color version and really think the result will be worth it at the end. I have a technical question: in row 25 we are starting with ch3 and 2dc and ending with 3dc. Then in row 26 it is ch3 and 2dc in first dc, then 1bpdc in next 3 dc. Shouldnt it be 1bpdc in next 2dc? Out of 3 dc from the last row I have already “used” one for 3dc and am left with only 2 more. And the similar situation is at the end of the row 26 where I should do 1bpdc in 3dc and then 3dc in the chain, but have only 2dc from row 25 before the chain. I hope you can follow 🙂

  26. I’m having a very tough time with this pattern. I wouldn’t call myself a beginner, but I’m not an expert either. I think my biggest problem is I don’t know how to count stitches after the pattern goes into repeats. You have the stitch count for the rows on the setup and first repeat, but nothing else. I keep messing up with each repeat and I have to tear it apart multiple times with each repeat. It’s also getting worse. I’m on the 3rd repeat and have ripped it out four times now. I have no idea where I keep messing up. Also I didn’t see any kind of mastery level on this pattern, maybe it’s intermediate and don’t know it. The pattern is still very pretty and I don’t want to give up because I’ve already worked this hard. Do you have any advice on like where it’s the easiest to mess up that way I can keep a better eye out. Thanks a lot.

    2. Hola, I traded retirement from laboratory research for volunteer teaching in rural Guatemala. Although the climate is excellent, living in rural Guatemala is learning to live without gracefully. We do NOT have postal or parcel services, medical nor Vet services. I do NOT have phone service at my home because there is no signal here in the mountains.

If you want something, you make it. Luckily, there are Pacas (2nd hand shops) for clothes & shoes. If I really want something from the US, I must wait until someone is coming here and agrees to bring it.

During the 10 years I’ve been here I returned to the US only once when I was knocked off my bicycle and broke my femur and pelvis in 2 places. I took an economy class, 12 hour flight on 3 different planes back to the US. I told American Airlines I could not walk. They stepped up and provided me with excellent service. When I arrived at the airport I called an ambulance and went to the emergency room. Job done.

About 4 years ago a friend agreed to bring me Scheepjes Catona yarn to make your beautiful Lost in Time shawl. I did not order sufficient yarn and had to wait 2 years until some else came here and agreed to bring me more yarn. I am delighted to tell you that I finished the shawl and it is absolutely beautiful. I put it on my twin bed as a cover during the day so I can enjoy it.

I am happy here despite the lack of goods & services. It is a botanical paradise. The Maya students are respectful and cooperative. I teach biology, chemistry, physics and statistics at the only English immersion K-12 school. Many of the students go to university in Guatemala and the US. They return to Guatemala and help develop the country intellectually and economically. I cannot think of a better way to spend retirement.

Having very little causes one to appreciate what one does have all the more. Thank you for your beautiful pattern. I’d send you a picture, but I don’t have a smartphone, nor a camera.

      Salud, Ana

  29. Hi Johanna,

I’ve been eyeing this gorgeous pattern for a couple of years now. (I still get compliments every time I wear my Secret Paths shawl) 😀 I’m ready to take the plunge but wanted to confirm that a single skein of each color in the Catona color guide is sufficient to complete the shawl? Thank you, and thanks so much for making these patterns free!

    1. Hi Caitlin and thank you very much! 🙂
You can see the approx amount of each color needed in the color guide at the end of this blog post. One color (Topaz) uses a little more than a skein. You can use some of the other colors instead since you will have plenty left of some other colors.

    2. It depends on how large you want your shawl.

I live where it’s cold and the pattern shawl size was just too small for me. I ordered 2 skeins of each color and then made the shawl bigger. I used the remaining yarn to very colorful knit socks.
