Finally time to release the “Lost in Time” shawl pattern. The name came to me becouse of the vintage feeling it has and also that the time flies by working on this shawl 🙂 This pattern is a repetition of 12 rows which means you can use any yarn or hook and customizing your shawls size by the number of repetitions.
Thank you so much Charlotta Hjortbacken (@charlottahjortbacken on Instagram) and Lisa Cook (@lisasattik on Instagram) for testing this design ❤
This shawl is made of bits and pieces of Scheepjes Catona, a 1oo % cotton yarn, and hook 4.0 mm. The size is aprox 145 cm wing span and 75 cm over the spine, tassels not included. The total amount of yarn is between 6 and 7 skeins of Catona 50 g. For this multi coloured version use the color guide at the bottom of this page.
You can buy the yarn for this version of the shawl via my Amazon US Storefront *. Be sure to look at the color guide below as a reference for yarn quantities.

Thank you so much for this gorgeous pattern! I’ve made it using yarn in colors that I hoped were similar to those you used. However, I am not happy with my colors & want to make it again with the Scheepjes Catona. Because I wasn’t sure of the weight/number of the yarn, I purchased worsted weight & I it seemed to be too heavy, so I went up a size on my hook. Still too stiff. So in love with your shawl!

Hi there! I really love your pattern (thank you for sharing it with us!), so I decided to make the multi-color version. As I know you didn’t have the exact amount of yarn, I decided to write it down as I go:
179 – Topaz – 67g
383 – Ginger Gold – 37g
395 – Willow – 46g
402 – Silver green – 38g
393 – Charcoal – 16g
240 – Amethyst – 32g
282 – Ultra Violet – 10g
408 – Old Rose – 5g
The quantities are for Catona yarn, using 4 mm hook and do not include the tassels.
I hope this helps 🙂

I love this pattern and I am hoping to make it soon. I would like to use the colors from the yarn kit “Royal Starling”. I love the way they look in the Taiga and In the Yarn Garden CAL patterns, but I’m am not quite confident of which position to substitute them in for the green, gold, and purples on the color chart that you have included. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Hello! Thank you for the wonderful pattern, it’s been fun to stitch! I’m currently on row 3 of the border and I was confused for a while until I zoomed in on the photographs. Thank you for making the rows different colors – super helpful to see what is going on! Anyways… the pattern reads: skip 1 dc, 1 sl st in front loop only in next 4 dc, 2 ch, 4 dc. It should clarify that the last 4 dc are also sl st in front loop only. 😊 Thanks again for sharing this wonderful pattern!

Hi there, I love your work and am currently make the Lost in Time shawl but, for some reason, I cannot seem to get the edge a the top to go straight. The whole thing is slanting on both sides so it looks more like a V and I don’t know why. I am following both the written and chart patterns. Could you advise me?Thank you!

Yes, that sounds like something is wrong. There should be 2 stitches added in every beginning and end.

hi, I love this pattern and have my wool and want to use a size 3 hook. Im hoping this will be ok. Can you please clarify the stitches you have with an asterix next to them on the pattern. You say that these sticks marked with an asterix can be explained by clicking ‘here’ on the pattern but the link is not live and I cannot find your explanation. How big is each popcorn? I have looked up how to make a popcorn and it varies with each pattern. Is this what is explained somewhere else? Thanks so much!

Hook 3.0 mm is fine, you may just need to make more repetitions of the pattern depending on with size you like. Those stitches are explained in stitch tutorials which you can find under menu here on my blog 🙂

Very beautiful pattern. May I know what thickness or yarn weight you used (as seen on the specifications on the label). Was it lace (0), fingering (1), sport (2), DK (3)? I’m sure it is not worsted weight. I will just try to look for an equivalent substitute that I can buy in Manila. Thanks!

Thank you! We dont use those terms here
but if you look at scheepjes Whirl its a great wheight for this shawl 🙂 the cotton flower yarn I used is three stranded and good for hook 3-4 mm 🙂

Hi, Debbie! Scheepjes Catona is a 4-ply sport weight 100% cotton yarn. If you love it exactly as shown, you *could* buy that yarn from Wool Warehouse (http://www.woolwarehouse.co.uk/yarn/scheepjes-catona-50g-all-colours). They ship to Manila!

Oh, and just to be super clear, it’s a sport (2)–just as you said. I left off the number in my original reply–but I wanted to be clear that we are talking the same language. 🙂

Any ideas on how I can adapt this to a poncho?
LikeLike
I have seen people sew two triangle shawls together as a poncho but I have never done it myself 🙂
LikeLike
I turned a large triangular shawl I had crocheted into a poncho by simply stitching the front edge together, starting at the bottom and working up until there was enough of a neck opening left to get my head through.
This would be a fascinating shawl to do that with.
Since I’m deliberately making it larger, I may consider doing that with mine too.

I love this pattern and I am making it at the moment using the same colour yarn as you.Not usually my choice of colours but I love them! On looking at the instructions for doing the border, I cannot see anything about the third side. Did you just do double crochets perhaps?

Hi! 🙂 and thank you! I didnt make a border for the third side, but I have seen many making a sc-crochet border to make it easier to fasten the ends.

Hi, first of all what a gorgeous pattern! I keep seeing it made on Instagram and when I received some beautiful yarn as a gift this morning this pattern was the first that came to mind – it’s worsted weight wool and my question is, what size hook would you suggest? I’m thinking 6mm or maybe even 7mm? Would really appreciate your input please! Thank you 🙂
LikeLike
Thank you! I very rarely use worsted wheight yarn so I really cant tell. But I think it will get to “heavy” if you use a small needle. Bigger needle would give a more beautiful drape. My tip is to visit Ravelry.com and look att the shawls others made and see what hook they have used. So many different yarns showing of there 🙂

Thank you yes I’m thinking bigger is better! I’ve been going through the related ravelry stuff, found one person who says it would work well in worsted for winter, but nobody that’s actually done it. Maybe I will be the first 🙂 I think I might try with an 8mm and just see what happens. Can always frog. Ooooooh and now I’m thinking, I remembered I have some Scheepjes stonewashed! That would be more perfect I think? Ah choices choices lol. Thanks for responding, and for making your beautiful pattern freely accessible 🙂

Oh I found the yarn ideas button! Lots of people have used Caron Cakes which are worsted so I’m checking out the hook sizes used. Will proceed 🙂

Got it figured out actually, but thanks.
I also opted to restart with a fluffier yarn along some other colorways of yarn, that a friend and I had dyed, and a larger hook to get a more open effect and to enhance the different textures.

Should I water and stretch it after ready? And if yes, what way you prefer and how much stretchen? As much as i can? Or do they use to do that only when knitting wool shawl..??

Thank you! 💙 If you block your shawl you will get more stitch definition which I think often makes your work even more beautiful, though its a matter of taste 🙂 All natural fibers (and yarn with both natural and sytethic fibers) blocks well. I usually soak my work and then pin it with stainless steel pins on a flat surface. You shouldnt strech too hard but quite firm. When its all dry you can take of the pins. The blocking will hold until next wash 👍🏻
