The Armadillo shawl is a striped shawl that is worked with two colors at the same time without cutting the yarn between the rows. The shape is a slightly asymmetric triangle. The Armadillo technique is easy, but the first few rows can be a little fiddly. Each row is worked with slip stitches on the right side of the shawl and with double crochets on the back side. This shawl is crocheted from one side to the other which makes the color changes appear diagonal. The slip stitches in this patterns gives you a fabric like feeling and a shawl that keeps the shape. This shawl can be made in any size and the pattern describes two different sizes including yarn amounts for those.
The Armadillo shawl above is made with one skein of Scheepjes Whirl 215g, 779 Passion Fruit Melt (starting from the outside) and 2 skeins of Scheepjes Whirlette 100 g, 859 Rose. The size is approx 190 x 140 x 115 cm (75 x 55 x 45.5 inch).
Pattern features:
- Written pattern in Swedish, English/US, Danish, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Slovak, Spanish.
- Photo tutorials to show the neccesary steps of the pattern.
Stitches used in this pattern (US terms): chain, slip stitch, double crochet.
Hook: 3.5mm.

That’s really pretty, I particularly like the Our Tribe version….. does the yarn carry up the side?

Thank you! 💙 With the technique used in this pattern you dont need to carry the yarn, you make the little ch-3 loops on the side 🙂

Hello Johanna,
I’m getting ready to try the Armadillo Shawl. I love the one made with Scheepjes Whirlette 854 and Our Tribe 962. May I ask how many skeins/cakes of each color did you use?
Thank you, Lisa Davis

Hello! I Love this Pattern. What is the difference between armadillo and xy Duo?

Hi,
The Armadillo is very flat in its texture and is made of slip stitches and double crochets (US terms). The XY Duo have a rippled texture and is made with single crochets 🙂
