Taiga

Nyhet!

News! Now the pattern for the alternative version of the Taiga shawl, Taiga “Royal Starling” edition is available. This one is made with the yarn Scheepjes Catona and the yarn kit “Royal Starling” from Favoritgarner. This yarn kit, with some of my favorite colours, holds eight skeins of Catona 50 g in the colours 173, 179, 240, 247, 282, 383, 393 and 394. A colour guide and pattern for this alternative Taiga design can be found further down this post

The Taiga shawl is a soft and warm shawl with both thick and lacy rows. The pattern for the shawls “body” is repeated 7 or 9 times before the edge is crocheted. Since the number of stitches differs if you make 7 or 9 rows there are two different charts for the edge. Depending on your yarm, size of hook and how big shawl you want you repeat the pattern 7 or 9 times.

For this shawl I used 4 skeins of the yarn Scheepjes Secret Garden färg 705.  Secret Garden is a soft and a little thicker yarn made of silk and cotton together with polyester. I made 7 repetitions of the pattern and used hook 5.0 mm. Size: 155 cm between the tips and spine 55 cm.

To this variation of the Taiga shawl I used the yarn Scheepjes Star Dust colour 662. Star dust is a very soft, airy and smooth glittering yarn made of wool, mohair and premiumacryl. Unfortunately one skein was not enough, BUT what was left on the second skein was enough for a Wild Wheat shawl. I used hook 4.0 mm and made 9 repetitions of the pattern.

  2. It’s so beautiful! I’d love to try to make it and I can order the secret garden yarn from the Wool Warehouse. I’m wondering if you have the pattern in written form, since I can’t figure the charts out. Sorry. It’s really a beautiful shawl. ❤☮

    1. I, too, have problems using charts even though I’m an experienced crocheter. I’m hoping one day you will have a written pattern.

  3. Hi – Love the looks of this shawl! I am looking at the pattern and have one question – is your pattern in UK or US terms… I somehow imagine that it is UK but thought I’d ask. I am a new crocheter and this will be my first time using a diagram pattern – your pattern looks like a great way to learn – thank you for sharing it. I’m ordering the Secret Garden yarn to do it in.

  5. Pleeeeeaase add stitch counts. What the stitch count should be after completing the final repeat before starting on the border. That would help so much. I didnt realize until after i started the border that i had an odd number of stitches and i cant find where i messed up 😧

  7. Hello,
Do you start with a magic circle? the chart doesn’t show that, I just wanted to make sure.

    Thanks,

  8. I absolutely love all the colour combinations that you had put together. Can’t wait to make my own one. I hv the same question about R1. U make a ch4 ring, and then you do the rest of the DC into the ch4-ring, or you try to do all the stitches in the chain where the slip stitch was made?

  10. I’m currently making this but I think due to my yarn I’ve picked it’s coming out small. I’m not even sure when I’ve done 9 repeats it will be big enough. Can you advise what it the next possible number of repeats I can do effect adding the boarder… what it the stitch count on row 9 if you’ve done 9 repeats. Thanks x

    1. Hi! In the Taiga blog post are some different variations of repetitions. For example the one made with Catona, the pattern was repeated 15 times before the edge was crocheted from chart 3. The Royal starling edition has 10 repeats and then a special border. Look at these and see which one suits your project 🙂

      1. Thanks for your help. Not sure if I’ll have enough yarn for 15 repeats oops. Might look at the royal starling edition. Or buy more yarn!!

  11. Love your pattern and I’m very keen to make it. As I live in New Zealand I can’t buy the specified yarn. Are you able to give me a guide to the colour please? eg 179 is orange, 394 is mid pink etc etc.
Thank you for your help in advance. I’m looking forward to getting started.
    Kind regards

  12. Hi, you do such lovely work! There isn’t anything you have posted that I am not in love with. Kudos to your beautiful work and gorgeous color combinations. I’ve been crocheting and knitting since I’ve been 7 years ago. I don’t know why but I am chart challenged for the life of me I can’t work from a chart. Thank you for always sharing your work.

  13. Hi Johanna, Thank you so much for your wonderful designs and wonderful tastes in colors. You are amazing. I’m happy to be part of your group. I have made the “Secret Paths” and “Lost in Time”. All my friends rave about your pattern!!! I have a question, I sat down tonight to make the Taiga shawl tonight and noticed that the pattern is only in chart form. Please, can you tell me, are you going to have a traditional pattern any time soon, even for sale. I love that one also. Have a wonderful wonderful day, luv, paula

    1. Hi Paula,
Thank you so much for your lovely message, and say hi to your friends from me 🙂
At the moment I have no plans of making a written pattern for the Taiga shawl, but you never know what the future hold.

      All the best,

  14. Im new to reading charted patterns and I’m having difficulty with how to start the Taiga Shawl. I know the stitches after the arrow, but do you have a foundation chain to base the half double crochet stitches in. Any help would be awesome!

  15. Hi, Thank you for sharing this beautiful pattern. I have repeated the pattern 9 times but think it might me too small for me. I will do 15 repeats but can you confirm that it is 15 repeats or 15 of the pattern in total? Thanks again!

  16. Finally getting around to making this shawl. I have a few questions. Do you finish off the rounds when changing colors then attach new color or pull new color thru as the last stitch is completed? Also, do you turn after row 1 to complete row 2?

  17. It looks amazing, but unfortunately my own tries failed a bit. I can’t find my chains to put the single crochets in! I was wondering, do you have any tricks for that? I don’t want to end up marking every single crochet, because I’ll be busy forever. :O

    1. Hi and thank you!

You could try to use a bigger hook if your fabric is so dense its hard to see the ch-1 spaces. It can be a good idea to put a marker in the very first stitch of the row to make sure you get it right at the end of the next row 🙂
      Kind regards,

  18. Hi Johanna,
thank you for your website and wonderful patterns (with great charts too). It’s awesome here, and you have a great taste when it comes to colour arrangements.
I’m making the Taïga shawl, I think 9 repetitions will be small (I’m at 7 repetitions so I can estimate) but going 15 repetitions (like told in other comments) way too big with the 7 rows border (which I really liked to do). Can we repeat it 10, 11, 12 etc. with the large border ? Or does the pattern works on an odd number of repetition ? You wrote 7 or 9 repetitions in the file, so could it be 11 or 13 (17, 19…) and still be working with the border in chart 3 ? This way I could adjust the size of my project. It may be a stupid question, but I hope you’ll have a little time to answer me,
    thanks a lot,
    Elo

  19. Hi Johanna,
thank you for your website, the patterns and great charts, the models are all so beautiful.
I have a question concerning the Taïga shawl : it’s supposed to be 7 or 9 repetitions of ranks 3-9,
and in the comments you wrote that people could also do 15 repetitions with the border on chart 3 (border I’d like to do if possible).
For me 9 will be too short (I’m at the 7th repetition so I can estimate) but 15 seems way too big (my yarn is thicker). I’m not sure what do do going forward, because I think I’d need between 11 or 13 repetitions with the chart 3 border to get a good length.
Can I do any number of repetitions in the between, keeping the chart 3 border ? Or is there a pattern, maybe doing on an odd number, like 11 or 13 repetitions ? Can I repeat it indifferently 10, 11, 12 etc. but only by using the other border (Starling border, very pretty too). It may be stupid, but the way I have arranged my colors, I need to plan ahead (for the next repetitions and onto the border), so for now I’m at a stop, and I’m still a beginner, I’m not capable of improvising with a complex pattern, not knowing if it follows maybe a multiple (x stitches before doing the border).
I hope you’ll have a little time to answer my concerns, so I can adapt to the length I want, thanks a lot for your great work,
    Best Regards,
    Elo.

    1. Hi Elo,
I have not done the math for all the different numbers of repetitions for this shawl. So I cant say if 11 or 13 repeats will fit with the chart 3 border. It would be safer to use the border from the Taiga Starling edition since that one is much easier to adapt to the number of stitches.
      Kind regards,
      Johanna
