My post Lost in Time – Key Lime Pi was so popular that I thought I would make the same kind of post about my Secret Paths made with Tasty Nom Nom.
Many ask about how many repetitions of the pattern you can make with one Whirl cake and how big the shawl will turn out. So I decided to share some facts about my Secret Paths made with Whirl.
I used the colour 789, Tasty Nom Nom.
After row 18 I repeated row 5 – 18 two more times. Then I repeated row 9 – 16 one more time (row 16 is a popcorn row) before making the border.
Hook: 3.5 mm (I crochet quite loose)
Gauge: After row 16 (a popcorn row) my shawl had the following measurement: upper edge 44 cm, sides 27 cm and spine 16 cm (after blocking).
Size: The measurement of the finished shawl, after blocking, is: Upper edge 164 cm, sides 120 cm and spine 70 cm (tassels not included).
You can find the pattern for Secret Paths here.
I recommend to block your crocheted shawls to increase the stitch definition, get a better shape and a more beautiful drape. If you like to read about blocking there is information about it here.
Thank you so much for the added information! Also served as a reminder to me that I must make this shawl.

Hello Johanna- thank you for the beautiful pattern. I am have made one for myself, and am now making one for a friend. I purchased Scheepjes Whirl in Tastey Nom Nom – I love how yours looks! I was so surprised when the yarn finally arrived that it was so fine. Did you do a double strand when you made your shawl? I am having a lot of trouble with this very thin yarn.

Hi and thank you! 🙂
I used one strand of the yarn and hook 3,5 mm. I think it just takes a little time to get used to thinner yarn if you have niot used that before. Maybe it will be easier for you to use a smaller hook like 3,0 mm?

Thank you for a lovely pattern.Wondering what to give my daughter-in law for her birthday—we were perusing pinterest and she exclaimed how much she liked the shawl- we looked at others but kept coming back to”secret paths”.As we have difficulties with getting the exact wool here I will have to experiment to get a nice effect.Sadly our terrible exchange rate makes it unaffordable to import.Glad to hear I am not the only one who crochets loosely.

Is the edging on the purple/wine colored one different than the pink one? I like the less lacy look on the purple one and am wondering if it has instructions for it? Also I can’t seem to access English to order that beautiful purple ombré color on the webpage for the whirl balls. Any advice? I am loving this pattern (on my second set of the repeated pattern). Thank you very much! Jessica

About the edge, I made it up as I went, its quite similar to the edge of the Taiga – Royal Starling edition but without the picots.
I hope this helps 😊

Hi,
A question: after the turn ch3 and then 2dc in 1st stich is the first stich the first dc or do you skip the first?
The reason I’m asking is that most patterns skip the first and my work seem to be looking a bit distorted. I’m at the beginning so it might be just that. Any advice is appretiated.

Hi! In this pattern the first stitch is the very first dc 🙂 You increase with 2 stitches in the end and beginning.

It will be for my mums birthday. I’m using Tasty Nom Nom as I think ot will look nice with her blonde hair. The color is feminine but not too bright.

Hi , I saw this pattern on Pinterest, lovely and I started this morning- for a gift to my prescious mom.
But I am quiet new to this. Simple question, sorry for those that are advanced in crochet already 😌
This is an triangular shawl but we start with a circle??? Where in the pattern do we start as I need to correlate if my stitches look more or less correct?
Then on the firts 3rd row ending “3dc etc. do we close the “circle”? because my work seems distorted an “open” from the change to the 2nd and 3rd row.
I’m so sorry. It is such a lovely shawl and I wish to make it.
Maybe better explained for me if you have a video?
Your guidance much appreciated.

Hi,
Yes, it is a triangular shawl but you work it in rows, not in a circle. After each row you turn your work and dont close the row. Each row consists of two sides 🙂
I hope this helps,
Johanna

Hi Johanna,
This is very confusing as the pdf pattern that I have downloaded from your blog in english clearly state:
Row 1:
4ch, sl st in 1:st ch to form a ring.
That is why I am asking about the circle.
Maybe the translation went wrong?
Please and I thank you for your time, guide me.
Regards Lanie

Hi again,
Yes, that is the ch-ring you start with.
Above row one it says: Turn your work after each row. All rows after row 1 does not suggest to close the row.
So, the very first ch-ring is closed and the you work all the following rows back and forward turning at the end of each row 🙂

Just absolutely love the shawl. Thank you for sharing your work. Greatly appreciated x x
I am about to start. With downloading your pattern ….your stitch explanation link will not take me to the link. Can you please tell me how many dc or sc there are for the “Popcorn and Puff” stitch you use in the pattern as I have found 3-4-5 either dc or sc or hdc examples online. I am familiar with them all but need to know the pattern stitches
Thank you

Hi! You can make dc’s instead of popcorns or you can make just one mesh row and then dc rows 🙂

So…in row 16, when the pattern says ch1, popcorn in next dc, ch1, etc, should I be doing what is done in row 7 and skipping a dc under the ch1 each time?

Hi, in row 15 you work ch1, 1dc, so in row 16 you work the dc’s in the dc’s in row 15 and skipping the ch-1 sps 🙂

Dear Johanna,
Beautiful shawl! 🙂 I only have one question: I like the coloring, did you start the shawl with the outside or the inside end of the yarn? It seems the latter to me, since the ending is the dark purple (which is the outside of the skein). Thank you in advance!

Hi and thank you! 🙂 Yes, youre right, I started from the inside of the skein/cake. The Tasty Nom Nom colorway is so pretty ❤

Hi, this is a beautiful pattern. I’m wondering is it normal for rows 16 and 17 to bunch up? It seems that my edges are curling after completing the popcorn row 16 and then row 17. Or, will the bunching up of the popcorns flatten out over the next few rows after row 17? What am I be doing wrong? Thanks for your help.

Hi, they should not bunch up. Its really hard to tell what might be wrong without a picture of your work. You can email me a picture and details to mijo.crochet@gmail.com and I will try to help you 🙂

I love this pattern. My sister dyes yarn and is having me crochet this shawl for a fiber arts show she will be in. She knits, and has some things she has knitted for the show and I am crocheting for her. I tend to crochet pretty tight so I’m using a 4mm hook and trying to crochet loosely. Do you have a gauge I could use to know if I’m going loose enough(or too loose)? So far I am really enjoying working on it, goes quickly and a lot of fun!
LikeLike
Oh that sounds like heaven to have a sister that dyes yarn 😀
I cant give you a gauge since I have never made the design with the yarn you use. Shawls drapes better if you dont crochet too tight. Also keep in mind that the post stitches in this pattern can get dense if working to tight. If you intend to block your finished shawl it will also makes the shawl drape better and showing of some more stitch definition.
I hope this helps a bit 🙂
Kind regards,
Johanna

I’ve tried several times to make this, I do not understand Row 7. You only have so many stitches to make. and once you get to the end of the row, you have all the extra directions. I don’t have enough stitches to continue unless I turn the row. Is there an error in the pattern or what am I doing wrong? Thank you.

Hi,
1 dc + ch 1 + 1 dc are all worked in the third chain in the beginning of previous row 🙂

The ch1,1dc+ch1+1dc are all done in the 3rd chain of the chain 3 from the beginning of row 6.
